How to fall in love with someone?
I have a friend who’s never had a romantic relationship, never felt the stirrings of love.
One day, he asked me, “How can I fall in love with someone?”
I answered, “Only partially.”
To love someone partially is simple. Just spend time alone, long enough to feel isolated. Forget what friendship feels like until the very sight of people no longer reminds you they’re human. Then, spend some time with that person.
To truly love someone, lose all hope in people. Turn your pleasant life upside down. Reject help from those who care. Act as if the world is against you, and when it’s all too much, lean on that person for a moment.
To love someone partially, change your outlook on your surroundings. View everything as meaningless except for that person. Place all your concerns in their hands. When they laugh, notice how you forget to breathe. Make them the only human in your world.
To fall in love, imagine a future where they matter immensely. Envision traveling the world together. Dream of spending every future moment with them.
To love someone partially is to realize it’s too late to remove their smile from your heart. Understand that it’s too late to erase their smallest details from your life. Accept that something invisible has taken root.
Yet, despite all this, you will love them partially.
In tough times, you’ll love the person who stands by you. You’ll love the hands that give you strength. You’ll love the one who creates joy for you. You’ll love them in the journeys not yet taken, in dreams not yet realized.
And what if all these things disappear?
You will have loved them partially. How will you love the other half?
When asked how to love someone, I’d say you can only love half.
Isn’t love magical? Why try to define it with methods and rules? Let it be mysterious.
One day, you’ll truly love someone fully. Even if they lack the traits you admire, you’ll still love them.
Don’t worry.
One day, you’ll fall in love completely.
